1. Who can apply for a sabbatical leave?
A full-time Administrative Faculty member, who has six years of continuous service at Eastern Oregon University.
2. How long can the sabbatical be?
Leave of absence is not to exceed one year.
3. How does one apply?
An application, a Contract for Sabbatical Leave, Vitae and a detailed plan of sabbatical activities must be submitted.

5. Who is to receive the sabbatical request?
Your immediate supervisor.
6. What happens after the paperwork is submitted?
a. The immediate supervisor or unit administrator will evaluate the proposal, consult with the vice president responsible for the area from which the proposal comes and submit a recommendation to the Administrative Faculty Personnel Committee (AFPC).
b. AFPC will review the sabbatical requests, rank them and submit the ranked recommendations to the University President.
7. Who makes final decision on granting sabbatical leaves?
The President of the University.
8. When will the President announce his decision?
As soon as possible, however the exact date will depend on the budget process.
9. Are there any obligations associated with a sabbatical leave?
Yes there is.
a. An agreement to return to the institution for a least one year’s service after the completion of the sabbatical leave.
b. You will report in writing to the President, your sabbatical activities and, if applicable, present a report to interested members of the academic community.
10. What activity qualifies for a sabbatical leave?
a. Preparation of new material or information which has institutional implications rather t than individual professional development.
b. Prepares the individual to move to a different position in the University or the individual is judged to be in need of additional training.
c. Activity will result in benefits for the support service functions of the University.
11. Can the sabbatical be taken in La Grande?
It is encouraged that the sabbatical leave plan will take you away from La Grande.
12. What criteria is used to review and rank sabbatical leave requests? Criteria is listed below in order of importance:
• Benefits accruing to the institution and consequences to the institution stemming from absence of applicant.
• The professional merit of the proposal.
• The immediacy of an invitation, grant, award, or project.
• Previous commitment to the project such as background work, previous personal sacrifice, attempt to obtain funding, etc.
• The degree of external recognition.
• The seniority of the applicant at Eastern Oregon University.
• The time since the applicant’s last sabbatical or leave of absence.
• The extent of outside funding obtained.
• Sabbatical leaves for the purpose of completing advanced degrees will be given lowest priority.
13. What is the compensation during a sabbatical leave?
9 month faculty - 3 term leave 60% of salary
2 term leave 75% of salary
1 term leave 85% of salary
12 month faculty - one year leave 60% of salary
8 month leave 75% of salary
4 month leave 85% of salary
14. Can one work to supplement sabbatical leave salary?
One may supplement the sabbatical salary provided the supplemental does not interfere with the objectives of the sabbatical leave. An individual on sabbatical leave shall not receive from all sources more than 120% of a person’s regular full-time salary.
