In January 1971, by Executive Order of the Governor, the State of Oregon implemented a statewide occupational safety program. The operation of the University includes an active employee safety program. Each employee is asked, as an individual, to contribute to the University's safety program to improve his or her own safety and that of their co-workers. Please read the following safety rules carefully and take an active interest in promoting safety in your work area.
Report all accidents and injuries to your supervisor within 24 hours.
Report all unsafe or potentially unsafe conditions to your supervisor.
Know the emergency action plans that apply to your job and work area. Fire rules and evacuation plans are available for the area in which you work.
Rules of safety are developed to protect you from injury and harm. Observe them at all times. If you do receive an on-the-job injury, be sure to report it to your supervisor within 24 hours. Your supervisor will furnish you with the appropriate forms which you should complete.
SAFETY POLICY
It is the policy of the Eastern Oregon University Safety Committee to assist in the protection, safety and health of Eastern's employees and students. Injuries and property loss from accidents are needless, costly, and preventable. Eastern adheres to fundamental safety concepts that will help prevent injury and loss due to recognized hazards.
Eastern has a responsibility to prevent accidents and injuries. The campus is held accountable for all aspects of their span of control. Eastern provides direction and full support of all safety procedures, job training, and hazard elimination practices.
Supervisors are directly responsible for job training of their workers. Job training will include proper procedures, work practices, and safe methods to carry out jobs. Supervisors must enforce campus rules and take immediate corrective action to eliminate hazardous conditions. They will not permit safety to be sacrificed for any reason.
The Safety Committee consists of management, faculty, staff and student representatives who have an interest in the general promotion of safety and health of Eastern's campus. The Committee is responsible for making recommendations on improving safety and health in the workplace. They are charged with the responsibility to define problems and obstacles for loss prevention; identify hazards and suggest corrective actions; help identify employee safety training needs; and to develop accident investigation procedures for Eastern's campus. The Safety Committee will be kept fully informed on health and safety issues throughout the campus in order to constantly review the effectiveness of the safety and health program.
All personnel, within their own department, are expected to cooperate in all aspects regarding safety and health issues. Some of the fundamental safety concepts are:
Each employee has personal responsibility for their own safety, as well as the safety of fellow workers. If everyone does their part by doing what is necessary to ensure workplace safety, then we all benefit.
