The following is a statement of policy concerning the opening of an individual class by an instructor for class visitor(s).
The instructor may invite or authorize a guest or guests to attend an individual lecture or class period. This excludes the invitations of guests for a longer period of time or for regular class attendance.
Speaker and/or Guest Lecturer - The Public Opening of a Class
When a speaker, a special program, or a guest lecturer has been scheduled for a regularly scheduled class, and in the judgment of the instructor the subject matter could provide a meaningful educational experience to others by publicly opening the class for other students or the general public, a request must be made to the Dean of the School for the opening of the class. Permission generally will be granted to open a class if:
The presentation or program can be meaningful and valid to visitors who have not had the same background or understanding of the subject matter that the regular members of the class have had.
A speaker has such stature that the opening of the class will serve as a meaningful educational experience for visitors.
Opening a Class to Visitors - Rationale
Classes are conducted for regularly enrolled students of all categories.
Faculty should consider the conflict in time created by the opening of classes. In order to prevent conflicts of time, administrative approval will be secured prior to the opening of a class for visitors.
